What can we do to make education more fun for childern and young people?

First of, I want to say hi, this is my first time here at yahoo answer. Please excuse my poor English

My question:

Many young people out there often complained about school, how boring it is, too much homework, I hate that teacher, I don’t like that class etc..etc… We call them whiners and lazy…. but…

Maybe it isn’t their fault, maybe the education system need some adjustment? Maybe the school teaches too many pointess subjects that have no use in real life? I personal didn’t do all that well in grade and high school, but when I reach college I seem to do a lot better. I think we need to make some major changes so that children LOVE to learn and love to go to school.

So, IYO What can we do to make education more fun for childern and young people?

I personally am a high school student and I know that a few subjects can be very boring.

But in nearly every subject that I dislike it is because of one thing: not enough practical work. Like in maths, if we could have a more ‘hands on’ lesson, then i thnk that everyone would enjoy it alot more. Things like making shapes out of materials and more things on the interactive whiteboard. I think the teachers just need to get the pupils more involved with the lesson and then their half way there.

Other lessons, such as foriegn languages, are one of the easiest lessons to make practical, but they very rarely are. I am not saying for teachers to make every lesson of every week a workshop, I just think that every so often, maybe just a few times a term, teachers could get the pupils more involved with the class. Not only would this aid the learning, I feel it would also motivate the pupils and make them enjoy the lesson.

But I suppose it rarely happens because of goverment rules and the teachers lack of effort in preparation for the lesson.

Hope this helps and welcome to yahoo answers!

First off I have been out of high school for 5 years. And when I look back I see that I learned the most when we went on field trips and had hands on activities. Now this may sound crazy for high school students but it actually worked for me, my grades went up, and I paid more attention. When we ask kids what they want to be when they grow up, have someone in that field to come and talk to them or make it a trip. And also give the children time to get what you are saying, because just saying it its not enough. Most children ( no matter the age) are audio and visual learners, so when you combine the two they learn more ( at least I did). Feel free to send me an email. By the way I am an Early Childhood Teacher

As a person with a trade background, I see the need and value for education, for any job or vocation. More often than not, we have to retrain skills and knowledge that should have been taught during their primary and high school years. From my perspective, it appears that the students are not motivated because they are not taught why it is important to learn the knowledge or skill that is presented. Put simply, the teacher tells the class to memorize multiplication tables in math, for example, and the students ask themselves why is it necessary for them to learn? and when will I use it? If the student fails to see the connection, he or she will shut down the motivation and resist the urge to learn.

what the educational system needs to do is to show direct applications of the knowledge and skills.

show real jobs using the knowledge and skills they are trying to teach in a real world situation. Show them the reasons, and they will motivate them selves to learn it. Have more field trips to real places of employment.

It is more obvious to adults who have experienced their adult working lives to make the connection on why learning is important. They are also motivated, for they want to become more valuable to an employer, and wish to land a job, or move into a promotion.

I think a better way is to personally approach each student in class or maybe do a survey and find out what they want from school. We’re grown-ups and so, think differently from kids/youngsters. We should let them voice out their own opinions, otherwise, our efforts to make education more interesting would be in vain if they don’t achieve the intended results.

Make it more realistic – use technology, do projects that are kind of like real jobs in real life – have tasks to complete, things to produce and make and present and make decisions on -you know, like the real world. All I ever did, and all my nieces and nephews do, is take standardized tests, do worksheets, etc. THAT IS NOTHING LIKE THE REAL WORLD. I think regular school as we know it has become completely useless beyond about 5th grade. After that, it is simply something to have to keep our kids at while their parents work.
