What can I do to make sure I get into a 4 year school as a Psychology major and English minor?

I failed out of my first yr of college last year mainly because I was in the wrong program and was miserable. I finally figured out that I want to eventually get a PhD or Masters in Clinical Child Psychology so I’m attending a 2 year school now to get back on my feet. My declared major is “liberal arts” but I’m also taking a lot of Psychology courses aside from what is required. I have about 30 credits down, but I’m worried after all is said and done I wont be accepted into a 4 year school because of my previous failure and my GPA is about a 3.4.

What kind of classes should I be taking? How do I know which credits will be accepted if I haven’t chosen a school yet? If I get in, would i have wasted two years in this junior college, or am i automatically forwarded to my third year as if i was in that school all along?

sorry so many questions!

In California, Ohio, and Minnesota (the three states I know a little bit about) the 2-year schools have relationships with public 4-year state schools and your 2-yr school advisor can tell you EXACTLY which classes will transfer if you go to one of the in state 4 year colleges. They can also give you the guidelines on what exactly your GPA will need to be in order transfer to a in state 4 year college.

As long as you are not taking vocational classes, your regular classes should transfer. English, math, science, history, sociology – these should all be fine.

Figure out which 4-year college you are aiming for and look at their distribution requirements; if they require 2 math classes, make sure you have done them. If they require 2 science classes, make sure you have done them. English. History. Whatever. Use the 2-year college to cover the distribution requirements at your 4-year college. Also, you should be able to take one year of general psychology and have it transfer, too.

If you have 2 years of normal, not vocational, classes at the 2 year college and work with a guidance counsellor at the 2 year college who knows what your in state public 4-year colleges will accept, you should be able to transfer into a public 4 year college as a junior and finish in two years.

You might not be able to fit in all of the requirements for the English minor as well as the psychology major if you are just on the campus of the 4-year college for two years. Get through your two years, transfer, and work on the psychology major. If you can do the English minor too, that’s a bonus – I think it might take beyond the 4th year to finish that minor, but maybe you will be lucky.

If you try to transfer to a private school after two years at a 2-year college, it will be a little bit harder. You would have to talk to someone at the private school to know exactly which of your classes will transfer.

Good luck!
