Things you can do before being accepted are to work out. You’ll be running wearing heavy equipment and carrying heavy equipment so do workouts to simulate this. Work on your endurance as well because some of the stuff you will be doing can take the energy out of you pretty quick if you’re not in shape. Hold off on any kind of training until you join because the department might be able to pay for it. They should also provide you with access to all the equipment and training you will need.

If you’re talking about a paid department it varys way too much between departments, most require a high school diploma and some a college degree. Your best bet here would be to look up the company’s website or call them.
