As a college professor, I think the attendance should be mandatory. This is not said as a punishment to students, but because research shows us that students who are successful attend classes.

Why is that? There are discussions that take place in the classroom that the material cannot cover. Classroom engages the students in the learning process and allows for all learning styles to be addressed. Students who do not attend classes never have the opportunity to apply the kinesthetic (hands on) approach for learning and this is proven to be the MOST EFFECTIVE means for absorbing and retaining materials.

Yes, college is a time to experience freedom for the first time, and adults should be responsible – but what also needs to be taken into account is the responsibility of the institution to provide opportunities for the student to be successful. That can’t happen if the student is not present.

I think attendance should be optional for college students. They can follow a course syllabus to keep up and check up on class announcements on blackboard. If they can teach themselves the material by reading the text books then why come to class. For some people it is difficult with work, kids etc. to attend all classes. I think if you show up to turn your work in and take tests that should be fine. Some classes; however, will require more hands on teaching, like nursing, dental hygienist, etc. For majors like those attendance would almost have to be mandatory.

Optional…when I went to school I had to work two jobs also so sometimes it was difficult to make it to every class. But I always got the notes from a friend or just read the text on what I missed. I got good grades even though I didn’t attend every class. Plus…we pay for it…we should decide if we really need to be there or not.
