Is majoring in Psychology hard?

I think I am going to major in psychology and minor in zoology because I want to be a dolphin trainer. I was just wondering how difficult psychology is to study.

It so depends on the level of seriousness in your school. Specifically, if they view Psychology as close to a hard science- like Biology or Pre-Med and then you will be required to take extra hard science and Lab courses. There may even be independent research requirements.

Or

Do they view Psychology as a softer Lib-Arts major – like English or Philosophy and there won’t be a lot of required courses in the major. That is, the major will only require 30 to 40 credits and no more?

So, you really have to study the college bulletin and course catalog to see how the major is structured in your school. It would be really ideal to find an upperclassman/person who is completing or a graduate who has completed the psych. major and ask him/her what the experience was like and how it rated with what they have heard from their friends in other schools. If you find a faculty member who is very honest – you may also get VERY valuable insights. The problem is, it’s difficult for faculty to talk without bias so, don’t ONLY rely on faculty without corroborating with student perspectives. It also helps to check out faculty members on Ratemyprofessor.com. From student comments, you can sometimes get a feel for the vibes in the courses. see if a lot of students are happy or if they are complaining about a lot of the courses.

It will not be hard to get a job, but like another poster said, without a masters degree and even a professional license (LPC or MSW) you will be little more than a dorm mother aka babysitter with the same pay. The reason this field is so bad is because for one, its a poor Field, not many folks who need help have the money to pay… also every college in gods green earth has a psychology department and they churn out graduates like no tomorrow. I would suggest you look at the classifieds of the local newspaper and see if there are any jobs even posted and what they entail…. and be prepared for that. Also, don’t borrow money to get a psychology degree, or not more than 20K for your entire degree. Any more than that and you won’t be able to make the student loan payments.

You’ll have a better chance for getting a job as a dolphin trainer. So, that being your preference, use your computer. Search for dolphin shelters, or something like that. You can also send them a letter, requesting the necessary qualifications for you to be eligible for employment as a trainer.

Psychologists are a dime a dozen. Do the sea world thing.
