Gramatically correct…?

“War almost breaks out between the dwarves and the men because each think the treasure belongs to himself.”

Should the last word be “himself” or “themselves”? And is “each think” correct, or should it be “each thinks”?

Oh, how I hate the use of a reflexive pronoun when a simple one will do.

Remember the rule about noun/verb agreement? The issue is with the verb form. It should read, “War almost breaks out between the dwarves and the men because each thinks the treasure belongs to them.” Substitute “it”, for “the treasure”, and you will see what I mean.

In the future, say your options aloud. You should be able to choose the correct form by hearing it.

each think the treasure belongs to himself. No quotation marks unless you are repeating what someone said or a famous quote or the name of a certain publication sometimes

I’m no expert, but I would say that the last word should be “themselves”. And therefore, because youve made this a plural, it should be “each thinks” as well.

You made my brain hurt.

it should read ” something almost happened that didn’t and some obscure reference to treasure was lost for all time”
