Is it possible to major in 2 different things?

For example, when I go to college next year I want to major in petroleum engineering. On several of the college’s websites that I was looking at it said something about dual-major. Does that mean you can major in 2 subjects? Or does it just take a few extra years?

I was wondering if I could major in petroleum engineering, and then also major in something such as physics, mechanical engineering, or something of the like.

Thanks for responding.

You can minor in a topic, get a double major, or even a double degree. (Some places even let you triple major.)

Each school does it differently, but generally you need to complete the full requirements for each major (or a subset for a minor). You’re best bet would be to talk to your guidance counselor. I did a double degree in 5 years (and a few summers), so it’s definitely do-able.

You absolutely can major in 2 related, or completely different things. People typically prefer to multiple-major in related subjects, because obviously if someone is great at one thing, he’s probably great at something related, and also because, like in your case, petroleum engineering and physics/mechanical engineering shares a lot of classes, so you won’t have to take all that many addition courses to complete the degree requirements. Of course, many people also choose to major in completely unrelated fields, such as my friend who is a dual major in Computer Engineering and Russian Literature

It is possible and not that difficult. It helps if the majors compliment each other or share some of the requirements. I got a bachelors in photography and picked up an additional bachelors in art education. I just took the extra classes over the summer and finished in 4 years.

yes you can major in two things… but when you’re in an engineering program i don’t believe you’re allowed to do so. this is because engineering in itself it a lot to take on, at UT it takes 5 years just to get an undergrad degree – i don’t think it would even be POSSIBLE to dual major.

most schools will allow for a double major, just ask your advisor at the school
