Is geograghy being taught in schools anymore??

I recently had to spend a huge amount of time on the road throughout the U.S.A. and was surprised by peoples lack of knowledge of regions, states and thier locations. I’m from Virginia, not exactly a tiny or easily missed state especially from a U.S. history standpoint! I was amazed by how many people thought I was from a state bordering or near New York or Florida. I didnt even bring up im a native of Delaware! Another thing I noticed was how many people I’ve met, no offense, but young people, that had no idea in what state certain cities are located. I’m not talking about places like Nahunta Georigia or Ten Sleep, Wyoming, I’m talking about cities like Kansas City, Missouri. Charlotte, North Carolina and Santa fe, New Mexico. My wife is a Geogragher and brought it to my attention. What do you think? What are your experiences with Geograghy or your kids Geograghy schooling? Please understand this post is not an indictment. I’d like to do something to help if it’s an issue.

I saw US geography being taught a little in some classes (usually fifth and sixth grade) that I subbed for, and geography of the Eastern Hemisphere being taught in seventh grade. Some students take a World Geography class in high school, but the schools around here only require the class for those who don’t take world history. However, I noticed a lot of older students forget it.

I had geography in the 6th grade and we hardly learned anything about the U.S;it was mostly just about the locations of other countries and their histories. They don’t teach U.S. history until highschool where I’m from, which is really lame. It’s all world history.

As for learning about other countries, I always thought it was interesting that they could talk to us about the religion but if we ever got to Christianity or one of the others predominate in the USA it became taboo. If they can talk about one religion they should be able to talk about them all.

They do still teach geography but it is focused more in other countries. The schools must think the students already know about the geography of their home country.

It seems that many students just don’t really see it as a necessary thing to know. It’s pretty sad when some people i know don’t even know where some states are located. I’ve had people ask me which coast was new york located.

This is the same thing that is happening to history too. It’s just not being seen as important to some people.

Yes, I just took geography last year in high school. It’s not the teachers’ fault. The students are the ones to blame because they never do their homeworks and project.

They taught me some in elementary school, around 4th or 5th grade. After that, they didn’t really bother with it.
