Important question regarding high school GPA (Grade Point Average)?

I am a senior with a 3.01 GPA. I am taking 8 classes, 4 each day(A/B day). What grades do I need to get to maintain or increase my current 3.01 GPA?

*Show me how to calculate this please*

Thanks.

You need to get “better than a B”, on average, in your classes:

A = 4.0

B = 3.0

C = 2.0

D = 1.0

F = 0.0

What is done to calculate your GPA is an average is taken. In other words, all of your grades are added together, and then divided by the number of grades that were added in.

So, a 3.01 is a B average. You need to do better than a B, in most cases, to get it to rise. Let’s say you get 4 A’s and 4 B’s at the end of the semester:

4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 28 divided by 8 = 3.5

Then your average with your current GPA. Not sure how this is figured. It could be as simple as the average of 3.5 and 3.01, which is 3.25. I don’t think it’s that quick and easy to bring your GPA up, though. Or it could be the average of your GPA each semester… I’d try it that way.

GPA’s are different at different schools. But here’s a pretty standard scale:

A=4.0

B=3.0

C=2.0

D=1.0

F=0

Calculate your unweighted GPA by adding up all of your individual classes’ GPA’s and then divide by the number of classes you have been taking. It’s just finding your average basically. Weighted GPA’s are different cuz they’re based off honors classes, etc. which I don’t understand at all, but don’t worry too much about those.

So it sounds like you basically get all B’s in your classes since you have a 3.01 GPA. You just need to maintain this B average to keep up this GPA. Obviously if you get higher grades than B’s, your GPA will increase.

Also at some schools, there are different GPA’s for + or – grades. For example, and A- is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3. I don’t know if all schools do this though. My mom’s didn’t when she was in school.

Good luck at school! Hope you can keep your grades up!!!

Yes, retake that biology class… it won’t look good on his transcript. He should stay at the community college until he finishes his lower-division requirements, then transfer to a good college for upper division courses that are related to his major. One of my friends took classes at a community college for 2 years, doing his lower-division work, and just transferred to UCLA as an East Asian Studies major. The only way for your son to improve his GPA is if he works hard and studies diligently for those exams. It’s up to him.

Half A’s Half C’s would do fine. Why settle for that?
