Im not sure if I should take my GED?

Im 17 years old and im already supposed to have graduated but i didnt have enough credits. My school requires 230 credits and i still need about 50 credits still. School has been stressing me since forever and Im not sure if i should just take my ged test or wait even more longer to get a diploma. i want to go to a community college and then transfer to a university if possible. would it matter if i didnt have my diploma becuz i heard community colleges accept people with geds. im in such a stressful pickle right now and i just would be thankful for any kind of advice.

Consider this. Each semester thousands of students in each state request a transfer from their community college to universities. During that evaluation process they look at everything with a fine tooth comb: your grades in college, your grades in high school, your test scores, etc. Do you think they won’t notice that you opted to take the GEDs over graduating high school proper?

Also consider this. College is significantly tougher than high school. If you find high school stressful, college will most likely be even worse.

My suggestion? Finish up high school. If you really are serious about going to college then finish up high school and then move on. You’ll be more prepared for the next step this way. If nothing else, you won’t have a black mark on your record that states you opted to take a shortcut when you could have just as easily finished high school the regular way.

Hi Leandra —

Don’t stress, Dear. There’s no need. Although you didn’t specify which state you’re attending school in, I think its fairly standard that anywhere that requires a high school diploma recognizes a GED. You should have no problem attending a community college with a GED instead of a diploma. Community colleges even allow high school students to take classes while still in high school, without a GED or diploma. I left high school early via Proficiency Exam, and actually started college prior to finishing high school. I made that choice because high school bored me to tears, and I wanted to get on with my life. Not once has it held me back, and I certainly don’t regret it. I went on to attend several different colleges and universities, even getting scholarships to attend. I have had my Bachelor’s Degree for nearly 3 years now. If you want to move on to college, rest assured that you shouldn’t have any problem if you’ve obtained your GED. For extra piece of mind, contact the Admissions department or a college admissions counselor and ask them. I’m confident they will tell you the same as I have just told you. Take a deep breath and move forward. 🙂

Getting your diploma is always better than getting your GED. With that said, research your community colleges and make sure they accept GEDs. If they do and your goal is to get into a University then you need to prove yourself in college. You need to figure out what stresses you out about school and change it – because college will, most likely, only be worse (especially if its the academics stressing you out). If you think you can handle college and you cannot stay in school any longer – then get your GED. But, I will repeat, it is always better to get your diploma than to get a GED and it is always better to get a GED than to drop out.

Life is stressful, and I hate to sound cruel but you need to grow up and get over yourself. We all had to go to school, and most of us finished with a diploma. You need to get it done now, before you never finish.

It’s very easy to give up and say i will do it tomorrow.

Don’t limit yourself to a community college because you’re stressed.

Grow up, that way I wont have to pay for your welfare checks. and you screw up my order at mcdonalds.

College is harder than high school so maybe you should pick up some good habits and try to finish here.
