No matter where you intern, you’ll probably be doing tasks that nobody else wants to do. But please remember that what you do is a vital part of any organization. That without you doing the less prestigious tasks, the organization would be backlogged with too much work, and probably grind to a halt. Menial work is part of any job you’ll have as an adult, the more able, willing, and responsible you are with less than glamorous tasks, the better.

The better to get noticed, the better to make good impressions, the better to get referred to jobs elsewhere, and the better to make long term contacts that can be counted on to give you good letters of recommendation.

Even in high school, an internship should allow you to learn about the business as a whole. Have you been sufficiently curious? That is, are you asking questions of the other workers that would give you helpful information about running the organization? Have you volunteered for more challenging responsibilities?

Decide what you want to get out of this internship and then start working for it. If this place can’t help you out with what you want to know, then ask for a new placement.
