I am interested in Delta Sigma Theta.I don’t know what the significance of fortitude is or the delta elephant?

I have expressed my interest to one of the Deltas and she told me what i should know. For instance, founders, charters, official symbol, Fortitude, delta elephant, etc. I have done my research, I’ve read “In Search of Sisterhood”, but i can’t find the significance of the Delta elephant, the difference between the official and unofficial symbol.I need help!! Actually I have found what the unofficial symbol is, the flower, and the meaning of Fortitude, I guess I just want reassurance that what I’ve found is legit. Can you PLEASE HELP?!

Hi There,

I am not sure why my soror told you that you need to know the things you listed above, because most of them will not be conveyed to you until you go through the Membership Intake Process. If you want my advice, the only thing you need to research is our history *Which is found in “In Search of Sisterhood* keep your grades up, and continue your community service. Knowing the other information that you listed is pointless unless you are going through the process. It will NOT get you a step closer of becoming a delta. The Main things we look for are grades, community service, and commitment.

Good luck to you!

Age does not matter. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc does not discriminate on any basis (except for sex, lol, you must be a female). But to be real, 25, is not old at all… the only reason that your age should deter you is if you feel uncomfortable. Your linesisters will only be a few years younger than you and some might be your age or older, but they are all adults so it won’t be a problem.

If you have actually read ISOS that should be satisfactory in answering many of your questions. Additionally, visit the national website and really take the time to read through it. It is not up to individual Deltas to reassure you that the information you are seeking is “legit.” Your own research of information that is public is key. Also, remember that discretion is one of the many things we value as an organization.
