Being in Retail management for eight years, the top skills that I have learned are;1) earn respect-you have to give an equal amount of respect to achieve this. 2) Give credit where credit is due. If a subordinate has a great idea, especially one that is implemented, give them ALL of the credit. You will gain thier trust and respect. 3) You want your subordinates to want your job. If you don’t let them grow out of fear of losing your job to one of them, then there won’t be anyone to take your job when it is time for you to get that promotion. 4) This one is the most important. Empower them to take their jobs into their own hands. If you give them the freedom to tackle a project without you telling them to, it will eventually make your job easier and you will shine in the eyes of your supervisors. Finally, it is ok to make mistakes, as long as you fess up to them and use them as a learning tool. Dig to find out what you did wrong, and if in doubt ask. This goes fo ryour employees also. Let them learn from their mistakes.
