Radio announcer: needs to know physics of sound, electricity, health, psychology of listeners

Carpenter: measurement, how wood reacts to stresses, physics of force of hammer & tools on wood & nails, etc.

Secretary: psychology of people, how to use machines, measurement regarding time, organizing & filing papers

Tree planter: types of tools for various types of soil, how to detect hidden rocks, how to move soil efficiently, know about needs of different species of trees, where to plant & needs for sun & water.

Over time, many people change their careers. You might decide to be something for which the knowledge of science is integral.

You could be a secretary for a medical, science or technology based organization. You could announce the news including scientific discoveries, you might need to understand the differences in root systems if you are a tree planter. etc.,

The real reason to understand science is to understand reality, truth, fact, belief, opinion etc.

I once dated a guy who I presented with various sets of non-controversial scientific data. He kept on saying, “I don’t believe that.” He wanted to live in a world where truth was whatever he wanted it to be. I found him to be quite ignorant and unsuitable.

So, whatever you end up being, if you don’t need science for the job, you may need to have a basic understanding of the world in order to relate to others in your socio-economic group.

hmm… Well, knowledge of science can be useful to anyone, regardless of their profession.

-You could better understand health issues either when you’re talking to your doctor about your health problems, when you’re trying to decide whether to worry about something or not.

-Chemistry might help you realize when mixing this and that might be unsafe.

-You can impress a 5 yr old boy with gross animal facts.

-When you read about the latest scientific study in the news, you know what questions are important, and can think about it critically and know how seriously to take the article.

-You can help your kids with their science homework

And I guess there might be some profession related reasons. It might help a carpenter to know a little something about the physics of what makes a structure strong. It might help a tree planter to know something about plants and animals (eg. recognizing destructive bugs and doing something about them instead of just letting them eat the tree they just planted.)

The study of science has nothing to do with usefulness for the above mentioned professions. The study of science is an asset that you can invest in your career – teacher, doctor, meteorologist, etc, etc…, or in your life regardless of what you do for a living. The more you know the better you live.
