Journalism is a four year course of study — however it is not always necessary to major in journalism! If you can get experience as an intern or on small town papers (or in the military as I did) you can have a four year degree in just about anything to get a job. In fact, sometimes employers would rather you have a sports or political science major and journalism minor and experience (then you’d know something about your possible areas of coverage).
In searching for journalism jobs, a clip file is primary! Your degree field is secondary (although a journalism major can offer more experience opportunities), as long as it is afour-years.
