How does someone who hasn’t worked since 2001 begin to look for work?

In 2001 I became a service-connected disabled veteran due to service in the 1991 Gulf War. Since then I haven’t worked as just before that, I was injured on the job (torn tendons from elbow) and was going to college via worker’s compensation.

Since I became service-connected thru the Veteran’s Admin, I decided to finally pursue and obtain my first BS degree and completed that in late 2005, which was in Computer Networking. I also have a few certifications, some of which have expired.

I have no work experience in that area but I do get hiring priority with gov’t positions. I have taken the postal exam of which I am at the top of the register because of my disability thru the VA. I can still work (I wasn’t rated “unemployable”) and still have the abilities physically and mentally (for the most part) and lately thought of pursuing work again. However, how do I explain the 6 year gap? Unless I just tell them what I said here about pusuing education. Thanks!

Tell employers the truth. They will be impressed with your return to education and the world of work after being disabled. It shows character, and the sacrifice you made will be respected. When you interview, stress the positives of what you have accomplished, rather than the negatives of “no work experience” or the “six-year gap”. You have nothing to apologize for and everything to be proud of. Go for it!

Yes, tell them exactly what you said here. One valid excuse for an employment gap is the pursuit of education. Coping with a service-related disability is an even better excuse.

Since you’ve been managing all this time without a job, I’d recommend doing some internships to build up your resume, if in fact you do find it difficult to land a permanent position right off the bat.

Robert,

Honesty is the best policy. Simply sharing a brief explanation about your work gap is the best possible strategy. Most employers will respect your forthright answers that come without excuses. You story will speak of dedication and a strong work ethic since you are not sitting back for a handout but pursuing a career which will help your fellow man.

This country is too busy with the amount of education you got and your age regardless of what you have achieved here in Canada..In England it’s not your age nor your experience that counts..it’s based on whether you can do the job.
