How does someone who hasn’t worked since 2001 begin to look for work?
Since I became service-connected thru the Veteran’s Admin, I decided to finally pursue and obtain my first BS degree and completed that in late 2005, which was in Computer Networking. I also have a few certifications, some of which have expired.
I have no work experience in that area but I do get hiring priority with gov’t positions. I have taken the postal exam of which I am at the top of the register because of my disability thru the VA. I can still work (I wasn’t rated “unemployable”) and still have the abilities physically and mentally (for the most part) and lately thought of pursuing work again. However, how do I explain the 6 year gap? Unless I just tell them what I said here about pusuing education. Thanks!

Since you’ve been managing all this time without a job, I’d recommend doing some internships to build up your resume, if in fact you do find it difficult to land a permanent position right off the bat.
Honesty is the best policy. Simply sharing a brief explanation about your work gap is the best possible strategy. Most employers will respect your forthright answers that come without excuses. You story will speak of dedication and a strong work ethic since you are not sitting back for a handout but pursuing a career which will help your fellow man.
