How can I improve my handwriting without spending an hour a day on it?
In school, they stuck all of us in front of a handwriting book and told us to work on it. No tips, no instructions, just the book. My printing is terrible.
I taught myself cursive so that’s a bit better, but I still can’t write quickly. I’ve taught myself to angle my handwriting more to the right because then I can write faster, but my normal tendency is to go slowly with no slant.
My handwriting is very small and angular.
I don’t have the time or attention span to sit around for an hour every day working on my lower-case ‘d’, but I’m a little worried because I’m taking the AP US history exam in May and my handwriting has some quirks that could be a problem.
My ‘e’s often look like ‘i’s, if I have an ‘l’ after an ‘o’ it looks like a ‘d’, and I have a tendency to omit the stem of an ‘i’ and just have the dot somewhat ambiguously placed.
How can I improve my handwriting enough to be basically legible?

With the assumption that that is true, I would say that your best bet is to not improve your handwriting, but instead to start from scratch. It would be analogous to trying to cut a hard piece of plastic with scissors. If you try cutting close to the edge, then your scissors will probably slip, but if start cutting a fresh surface, the chances of fault are far less.
try a few different fountain pens to see which is best for you. eg you may find that a medium-to-broad nib at a slight angle gives you more control.
