Before 1550, Europe just emerged from dark ages and was in the Renaissance stage, so there is not much interesting research into Europe countries’ history except the Roman Empire and the Greek history. Between 476AD, after the fall of the roman empire until the fall of Byzantine in 1492AD, Europe was in dark ages.

The east may promise more research topics, eg. the mongol empire, China and the Arab empire. During the time when Europe was still in dark ages, they have the most advance civilisation during that time. You may find the history is far more exciting to research.

If you prefer ancient civilisation, Ancient Egypt, Babylon, China and India may appeal to you.

1492, not for Columbus’s discovery of America, but for the Spanish defeat of the Moors in Grenada than, finally, drove the Arabs out of Europe permanently (so far).
