GED stands for “General Education Diploma”. A GED and a High School Diploma are “technically” the same thing. However, if an employer sees that you have a GED versus a High School Diploma, they may think you just “took the easy way out” and won’t be around if the going gets tough. Besides, A GED gives you JUST the MINIMUM basics for survival (i.e. job at McDonalds) whereas the High School Diploma opens the door for college and high level (more money) employment. Tough it out and get the High School Diploma….in the long run you will regret just getting the GED.

I got my GED my junior year because I was bored with school and ready to move on to college. It doesn’t stop you from going to college (I did!A very good school too, and I currently earn $150k a year) or anything else, except I think that the military does not accept GEDs. No big whoop.

A lot of people IN the public education system will tell you that “GEDs are frowned upon by colleges”, but that has not been my experience at all, as long as your SAT/ACT scores are where they need to be. There is a stigma attached to the GED that is quite undesearved.

I am 65 years of age and I will answer your question in a way that I hope you can understand. In all my years of experience as a business man I have never heard of anyone verifying either a high school or a G.E.D. for employment purposes. As for the difference,a G.E.D. will not qualify you for any higher learning institution and only states that you have a general knowledge, the same as those who have received a diploma by taking general courses. The most important thing that you can do in life is to learn how to learn. That is probably the single most important item that higher education teaches.

In closing, please think twice before you give up your precious time as a youth for a G.E.D. Even if you do not further your education, remember, you have only had a very short time as far as education goes. Continue to read and self educate yourself as much as possible. It will not be easy but It can be done. I am living proof. I have been very successful with only a high school education but I still, to this day, wish that I had attended college and now since I am retired that is exactly what I am doing.

Good luck and I hope this helps answer your question to some degree.
