yeah I’ve noticed that a lot, too. But some also say to prepare for the future and other stuff.

That’s the long view. They could say something such as “to prepare you for next week’s exam.” In the U.S., at least, the standardized exams at the end of the year are taken as an indication of how well the teacher has taught, so they do want to prepare you for those.

Bruce Williams, a talk radio host, said it best: “Eighty percent of what we learn we may never use. The trouble is, we don’t know until years later which twenty percent we will need to know.”

LOL — well they are right. Each year of our life prepares us for the next year. One experience prepares us for the next experience. Life is just one big learning experience, we are always learning something whether we are doing it in school or not.

You have to go to school to learn all the basics that will help you to survive in the adult world.

What would you have them say? “So that I have a job?”

Student: “Why do we have to go to the 7th grade?”

Teacher: “So I can get paid teaching.”

it keeps you motivated to keep going i guess. If they said “to teach you something you are never going to use later” would you continue on or even try very hard?

and why isn’t your reply:

“so why aren’t you doing that?”

with the follow-up question:

“why don’t you support proficiency testing of teachers?”
