It’s normal to be nervous, and no matter how other people look when they give the speech, they are nervous as well. Take a few deep breaths to allow the blood to keep pumping, remember to breath while your up there, and give it your best shot. When you get up there your adrenaline will start pumping, and many people mistake that for nerves. All you have to do is put that excess energy to good use by moving your arms while you speak and making good use of visual aides. Remember, it’s normal to get the jitters before/during a speech, just turn that negative energy into postitive energy.

Good luck!

Be well prepared. Go over the speech a few times so it just rolls out of your mouth. If you are afraid of getting ‘stuck’, not remembering what comes next, it’s more likely that it will happen.

Start with a joke. In fact if you start with a joke, then tell another joke, people will quiet down and listen more carefully, expecting you to tell another joke, and they don’t want to miss it.

Pacing is really important! Don’t talk too fast or too slow. You tend to speed up when you get nervous. Practice this. Be aware of pacing as you deliver the speech.

Finally, about ‘stage fright’. I was a speech/drama major for a while and they made us ‘perform’ a lot–speaking, debating, acting, reading, etc. “Stage fright” means your heart is pounding, you’re full of adrenaline, your mind is racing. You are ready for anything! When you’re like this, you’re at your BEST! It shouldn’t be called ‘stage fright’ we were told, it should be called ‘stage POWER!’ Welcome that feeling and -use- it!

Oh, another thing I just thought of. Before you go on, like 3 or 4 minutes before, relax your neck so that your head droops down onto your chest. Relax it like this for a few seconds, then roll it to the left or right. Roll it all the way around, like you have no muscles at all in your neck–don’t -move- it, just move your shoulders and let it roll. If you’re nervous you’ll hear some clicking and popping in your neck–that’s good! I promise your head is not going to fall off. Do this for three or four revolutions. It stretches out your neck and relaxes your vocal chords so your voice gets lower and ‘deeper’ and you don’t sound nervous, you sound relaxed!

When U walk your way to the stage , try to look around U , look at the people so U break the unknown and get a little familiar with the faces and the atmosphere . Also when U pause during the speech’s sentances , look at one of the people infront of you so as I said you break the fear-like feeling and give people an impression that U R confident . I dunno but It really worked for me and for a friend of mine . Good Luck .

Speak about something you are interested or passionate about. Three minutes about your favorite football team, your dog, your car, the features of your cell phone, a great book you read, anything really. Pick your topic, make a note of 5-6 interesting facts or observations about that topic, organize them, practice and then go for it!
