GPA for occupational therapy program?

I’d like to ask any one who is an OT and has a Master’s Degree about their GPA. What GPA did you have when you were accepted to grad school?

I have a 3.4, is that good to even be considered? (program requires 3.0, but I feel like I’m not standing out from the pool of applicants) Please give me some feedback. Brutal honesty is appreciated

It would depend on the school that you are applying to and how many people are applying to this program. I would talk to admissions and see what other requirements need to be met.

I do believe the lowest GPA in my class was 3.5 but there were other factors such as volunteer time and references from them, a 1000 word essay on why you want to be an OT, and other personal references. I know I am forgetting something but can’t seem to remember what else.

We had some 300 people apply that year and the class after me only had 50 so the GPA standards were a bit different.

Your GPA will be fine at 3.4. The criteria to be accepted into an MOT program is usually at 3.2 GPA; however the competition sets the bar higher because people who usually apply have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. I would not dismay though. Acceptance to an MOT program usually entails other factors and requirements other than GPA. Acceptance is usually based on a point system which Im not completely sure of, but I know because that is how we were evaluated an accepted into my program. Doing great (B+s or higher) on weighted classes such as AP 1 &2, Neuroanatomy, Med Term, Dev Psych, and Statistics will raise your points. Getting a 900 or higher on your GRE should raise your points higher as well. Your school may require you to write and essay, provide 3 letters of recommendation, and 100 hours of OT shadowing/ observations in traditional and nontraditional settings. Once youre done with that, if youve met the requirements and have enough score based on the point system, you will be invited for a second round of screenings in which you will be interviewed personally or through a panel. This interview is where you show your professors your personality, enthusiasm, values, and whether you can form a therapeutic relationship with your clients. Your acceptance is based on more than just GPAs. I would not fret, a colleague of mine was accepted into the program with a 3.3 GPA, so its possible. Your professors also understand that people change and messing up in your freshman year is part of who you are and why you are trying your best at this moment to get into the program. The best advice I can give you at the moment though is to contact the OT intent advisor of your program so you will know the requirements of your program. They will be able to answer most of your questions in regards to GPA, GRE, and shadowing hours to be accepted into the program. The earlier you do it, the more options will open up to you. They may even provide you info if they have a 3+2 program for OT in your university so that you can graduate in 5 1/2 years. Anyway, good luck on your studies and progress.
