Unfortunately, you CANNOT get a GED online. It is a government issued test and diploma, and can only be taken at authorized testing centers. Any websites that offer a GED online are most definitely scams.

There are some websites out there that offer a virtual-learning high school diploma (which is very different from a GED), but most of these places require what often seem like tuition-like fees (up to several hundreds of dollars). And it is unclear whether the services these online high school diploma sites offer are legit or not.

The good news is, however, that in most areas the battery of all 5 of the GED tests only costs about $60 TOTAL, although it could be more or less depending on your location, so be sure to contact local testing centers regarding the fees. But this small fee will be worth it for your sister to have a REAL GED diploma, rather than something from a sketchy or fraudulent scam online.

Here’s a website you can use to find a local testing center:

Good luck. I hope this helps!

Edited to add:

If your sister’s friend found a site to take the GED online, then you’re welcome to try it if you want. But I know for a fact, from both personal experience taking the GED and from volunteering at testing centers, that you cannot get a legit GED online. Here is one of the top GED prep and informational sites that further explains the online GED issues: http://www.passged.com/how-get-ged.php

As I said before, though, you can definitely get a high school diploma online. The fees at such places vary (maybe a few are free?), and although it is unclear whether or not these high school diploma services are legit, a few calls to the BBB and/or to your state Dept. of Education should clear up that question.

I also wanted to add that you can take GED preparation classes online for free. And I know of one site that I’d recommend to do so:

Anyways, good luck with whatever you or your sister decide to do! Regardless of how you go about it, a high school education (GED or regular HS diploma) is a very important achievement. Best wishes!

NO! You cannot get it for free online. What she can do, if she is ages 16-24 she could apply to job corps program (a USA program for people ages 16-24) and she can earn her GED through them and then learn a trade through them and might even get housing and get paid a little to train for a career! Seriously.
I think the website is www.jobcorps.gov or org

If she doesn’t want to go through job corps then she has to pay a local community college or vocational school that offers GED testing. It is probably under 100 dollars

There are very few states that offer the GED test for free.

Here is a website that might help.

GED practice test, testing locations, GED testing fees.

They have GED testing fees based on location.

Don’t trust any online GED sites. They are all either scams or fake GED’s.
