Does it bother anyone else how often apostrophes are misused?

…especially in the case of acronyms and making things plural. Whenever I see STD’s or VCR’s when people are trying to pluralize things it drives me nuts! For example, I often see questions like, “What STD’s are out there?” and I always think to myself, “I wonder what BELONGS to the STD?”

What’s so hard about telling the difference between pluralizing and making something possessive? Did the rest of the country fail 3rd grade or something?

Yes, I am a stickler for correct grammar and punctuation too. When I was in the Army I would encounter it a lot. As a private I learned quickly not to correct a sergeant’s punctuation or spelling. Most of those idiots would say the same thing, though: “If you can understand it, then it’s good enough!” That was after having to do a bunch of pushups. Now I am a teacher and I see other teachers’ writing from time to time. I see these professionals mispelling words and using the wrong punctuation. In a country where even our president speaks like a 2nd grader you can’t expect much else. I still correct that stuff when I see it though. Everyone I work with has gotten to the point where they will come to me for help when they need it. I don’t get on them about it, I just tell them about their errors before it goes up the chain. I’ve been able to do it without being offensive. They understand I am trying to be helpful. Have a good day!

It’s (I hope I used that right) been so long since I’ve had formal training in punctuation that although I am a secretary; I still have to have someone go behind me to proof my data. Thanks for bringing it up though!
