If you’re looking for a big donation … you need to put yourself in the position of the party donating the money. What’s in it for them? Sure it’s a tax write off … but they can donate to any non-profit and get that.

What can you do for the company that you’re getting the money from?

Here are a few suggestions:

Signage

Their name and logo on your banners at the event and/or on your t-shirts.

Advertising

Include them in your newspaper advertising, flyers posters, and in your radio public service announcements.

Community Goodwill

Promise letters to the editor to the local paper of what great people they are.

This will make you a salesperson offering true value for their donation … rather than just another beggar.

Oh, don’t type the letter in all caps. You shouldn’t use contractions but if you do use apostrophes.

IM should be I’m. In a formal letter it should be I am.

You can find a template on the microsoft website at http://office.microsoft.com/templates

If you need further help, I work with a non-profit and can help.
