Has he checked the Smithsonian? You are in the ideal area for work at museums. That would be a good possibility. Writing may be a possibility, as a research assistant for a professor, or a teaching assistant or lecturer at university. Even with an education degree there isn’t a lot of demand for history teachers, so he may need to look beyond high school to the college system.
Best of luck with it. I hope he finds something that is both satisfying and economically viable.
Its not what you do or what you pick, its now you do it. Clearly getting a history degree was a total waste of money. Its clear he has to teach or be a journalist. What other job would pay you for spending 45,000 to be the best person known for what the hell happened in the Civil War? Nobody.
For the job market he is screwed. Now if he has a degree from a college he can just get his teaching certificate. He will most likely teach history. He wont need to go to school for that, just sign up.
Its odviously clear his passion is about this. Maybe he should write a book. But I think most people would agree it was a total waste of money. He just has to be happy in his job. Teaching would be the best choice. Or writing a book. I would actually read it.
The point is very simple. A zit faced 16 year old boy with a fake ID has the same skills as your husband for 99.9999% of all jobs out there. He has to pick a job that he qualifies in, teaching is one.
Here are some ideas:
1.) Try the Center for Army Military History (http://www.army.mil/cmh/) or the Naval Historical Center (http://www.history.navy.mil/). Both are located in Washington, DC
2.) The National Archives which is located in DC has entry-level positions. http://www.archives.gov/
3.) Government Jobs – (http://www.usajobs.gov/) There are a plethora of good entry level fed jobs in DC which require a general BA or BS degree.
4.) The Discovery Channel (http://dsc.discovery.com/) which owns the Military Channel is located in the DC burbs (Silver Spring, MD). Maybe he could intern to get his foot in the door.
I could go on and on. There are many, many jobs in the DC area for someone with his background.
If he truly wants to work in the field he can do it. However, he may have to start at the bottom or work as an unpaid intern during the day and wait tables at night. If History is truly his passion, he should make it work. He is in the perfect place at the perfect time in his life.
Good Luck!!
good luck
One of Yahoo’s columnists in the Finance section deals with what she calls “Generation Debt”. Some interesting reading.
As to the masters to teach high school, forget it.
My sister has a masters plus 11 years experience, and just recently got a pay raise to put her salary above $40K.
Good luck, and let him know he’s not alone!
