Your eyes focus in complex ways. When you cross your eyes you flex the muscles on the nose side of your eyes and this distorts the round shape of your eye. To focus you eye needs to be round among other things. With practice you can cross your eyes and retain focus, with the eye adjusting for this temporary un-round state. Understand that this is hard on the muscles of your eye, so don’t do it much.
