Can I go to med school for psychiatry right after my BA?

I was looking at some of the salary ranges for psychologist, and I thought I’d bump it a bit. If I wanted to go to med school to go into psychiatry do I do that after my BA or after an MA, also I am majoring in psychology at the present time what would one need to major in for a BA in order to go to med.

I would say you should speak to a college advisor or a Professor to get specific recommendations. I do agree with you that attending med school for Psychiatry or getting either a Master’s or a Doctor of Psychology degree will help increase your salary and your career options. Take it from me, I have had my BA Degree in Psychology since 2000 and just this year I am finally going back to school again. There are limits to how much you can make in the behavioral health field with just a Bachelor’s Degree.

Also, if you want to go further with your education, I’d recommend taking extra science and math courses as recommended by an advisor, and probably go for a Bachelor of Science rather than a Bachelor of Arts. I say this because I never took Chemistry or Physics, and I am now having to take those courses as well as some other science courses to get the pre-requisites needed to pursue another degree, and from the research I’ve done it looks like most schools want you to have taken those courses. If you already have taken those types of classes, then that’s great!

Best of luck!

You will probably need to take some courses in addition to your BA requirements, especially in chemistry and math. A friend of mine went to med school right out of college with a BA in Art History, but she minored in chemistry and took plenty of extra math. It took her an extra 2 quarters to finish because of the additional requirements. Psychiatry also requires, from what I’ve heard, an additional 2 years after med school, so be prepared to be in it for the long haul.

first of all, you have to be a medical doctor before becoming a psychiatrist – it is usually considered a medical specialty – like being an internist, or pediatrician.

to get into medical school there is no one exact method to get in the door. some people say it is good to be one major or another – then you hear about someone else who majored in a completely unrelated subject who gets in.

generally you have to take entrance exams to get into medical school – it is like the SAT’s all over again except harder. you have to do essays about yourself and what makes you so gosh darned special. life experience shows up here.

you migh consider getting some volunteer experience with your psych degree or helping people in some way – study lots of math &human related sciences, read lots of books about sociology and culture. get to be very diversified in your knowledge and then give it a go.

good luck

i think with the intention to get into med college, you’re able to be able to desire to have a ba or masters in pre-med. whilst in med college, you do no longer in trouble-free terms learn one field, like on your case, psychiatry, you learn the full spectrum on the scientific field, so having a level in one section does no longer do lots once you are going to income the full spectrum once you get into med college.

KC girl,

You don’t have to go to med school to become a psychologist. You can get your PhD and go through that route. However, caution, there are some things that you can and can not do as a PhD psychologist so you may want to research that.
