in this sentence…what does ‘as’ means???

and….deadly extremes…

likely cause dead…situation like that??

In this sentence, As= While

And, yes, as a general rule, a deadly extreme would cause death. Basically, (without reading the context in which this sentence was written) it says China is full of dangerous pollution.

Here “as” means “at this time when”. Deadly extremes means pollution will reach such a level that the results will be deadly.

In other words it will become dangerous to the extent that it may cause death.
