“bear” is synonymous here to “able to endure”.

The phrase simply means, are you still able to endure the pressures/ pain?

For example, “Are his kids still able to bear up under the strain of their parents’ divorce?” simply means, are the kids still okay, still able to hold on, after the strain of the divorce?

It’s a phrase that has engineering roots. It’s about bearing the weight of something that seems to be a lot heavier then the thing that is supporting it. Like a railway engine going over a bridge.

It has come to mean a more personal thing with regard to a person coping under the strain of an event in their life, such as divorce, or bereavement or pressures at work that would appear to overwhelm weaker folks quite easily.

Be encouraged as you consider the following: The Ten Commandments (called the Decalogue) were given by GOD as a tool to form and shape a divine nation. Most of the divisive behaviors and violations identified in the law (e.g., adultery, idol worship, parent-abuse, stealing), were commonly held, and routinely practiced among those that left Egypt with Moses. However, more than simply a civil code to regulate social interaction, the Decalogue makes visible the divine person as Judge, and the sacred process of Judgment. It is correct to understand the 10th commandment as prohibiting lying as a daily, habitual, and routine practice. More than this, the commandment prohibits perjury [i.e., lying in the course of judgment; supplying false or tainted evidence]. Verbal statements are accounted as valid evidence (called testimony), because they are rendered under oath to be “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” Given their status as truth, eyewitness reports are given equal weight with DNA, fibers, fingerprints, footprints, and the “smoking gun.” To bear false witness includes perverting the truth, [i.e., turning others away from truth], practicing deception, and slander—what we call “the work of the Devil.” Thus, in addition to lying in the course of a formal trial (i.e., under oath, and on the witness stand), “false witness” means breaking promises, gossiping, leaking information, pledging in conspiracy, spreading rumors, and violating ones oath of office. There is far more to be said, correctly understood, and spiritually apprehended. (For example, to bear false witness against GOD is to blaspheme. To enter into covenant with GOD who does not lie is to forfeit and give up ones “right” to lying, because lying then accuses, attacks, and misrepresents the Almighty.) Even so, I trust this fragment will be useful. Be it unto you according to your faith. Washington, DC
