Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance narrator?
I have to write an essay about this novel and after struggling so much to read it, I still do not know who the narrator is. Is the author the main character in the book and telling the story?

Yes, the narrator is the author. But he also seems to suffer from a form of schizophrenia, so in telling his story there may be parts of it where he sounds as though he is speaking of an entirely different person even though he is writing about himself. Of course, this could cause confusion for the reader.
