Do you know any classical roman/italian literary period?

I have to do a research project that is due on tuesday and I feel I need help(its for english). I have to find the time span of the period, major historical events that may have taken place during that time(war, natural disaster, political changes, etc), pick one major literary work that exemplifies that period, and find an author that made an impact on that literary period. I just need like an idea because I feel lost on what to do. I appreciate anyone who tries to help, thanks!

Fourteenth century Italy would be fabulous. This was during the Renaissance. Focus on Florence. The black plague was in full swing in Florence. The best writer of this period was Boccaccio and his Decameron.

The characters in the Decameron decide to leave Florence because of the plague, head out into the countryside, and sit out the plague there. The Decameron consists of the 100 stories they tell each other to keep themselves busy.

So there you have it. A stunning historical backdrop: the plague and the Italian Renaissance. Plus a timeless writer, who influenced Chaucer and Shakespeare.

I also urge you to read a few of these stories to get a drift of what the book is about. Each one is just a wee short story. The first chapter of the book will lay the foundation for the whole story: the plague, how the characters leave the city, how they decide to fill their time by making up stories.
