I dont know how to set this word problem up.

Mr. Thomas invest $20,000 in two bonds. One pays 5% and the other pays 6%. If the total interest from the two bonds is $1150, how much did he invest at each rate?

use systems of equations:

x+y=20000

.05x+.06y=1150

multiply the top equation by .05

.05x+.05y=1000

.05x+.06y=1150

subtract terms

-.01y=-150

divide each side by -.01

y=15000

so at the 6% rate he invested $15000

to find the 5% rate plug y into the very first equation

x+15000=20000

x=$5000

This is guess and check.

10000 each = 1100 interest

9000 and 11, 000 = 1110 interest

5000 and 15,000= 1150 interest

5,000 at 5%

15, 000 at 6% is the correct answer

Here’s the setup:

x + y = 20,000

.05x + .06y = 1,150

It sounds like you know how to go on from there.
