The US Constitution was written in order to form a stronger central government for the thirteen colonies than the existing Articles of Confederation provided. The A of C government had very little power on its own, it was kinda like the UN–a collection of thirteen individual governments who came together to talk about ways they could resolve their differences and make an impact as a whole, but it had no power compared to the power of the states–for instance, the only way the US government could collect taxes was if the states decided to let it.

I think this worried some people in the former colonies. How could South Carolina stand up to an attack from the French or British, or even just pirates? By standing together, they could form an army, make it easier to trade between the colonies, and make an effort to keep the country together, rather than letting it divide into a bunch of smaller, but more homogenous pieces.

I think it was a desire for security and unity that drove the US to adopt a stronger Constitution.

I’m glad you asked me that.

Once the colonies had achieved their independence from England, that left them as the political equals of England, France, and each other (see the Declaration of Independence).

The Constitution was written to form a cooperative union of the mutual interests of the individual states (mostly being defense and uniformity of immigration and currency), while retaining the sovereignty of the individual states.

An ordered society must set up rules and regulations.

By the time the US was forming our society not only had general rules but we wanted to let other countries know what we were about.

We were not a monarchy, we were not attached to any other culture because are own was being formed from the various peoples that were in our population and the freedoms we were allowing. This was very different from the culture/society in Europe where our ancestors came from and rightly so.

the us constitution was written because the people felt that the government and the power of the government needed to be defined. then, the bill of rights was written because the people felt that their rights should be stated.

To make sure that people could refer to it in perpetuity — and no one could be expected to memorize the whole thing.
