Teachers have lives too and cannot be expected to be on call for 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
That said, a teacher should have posted availability hours for at least once a week before and after the school day.
Professors in college have a much lower class load in the times that they actually meet classes, so I would hope that they have additional hours to the ones suggested above.
I think it’s great when teachers are avaliable for students before & after school and durring lunch hours because many students will come and hang out just to chat and get to know the teacher. Not all teachers like this, but I do because you can help your students with assignments, personal issues they have or even to organize for a class–some students like to do certain work with the technology & this is a great time for that. It helps a teacher as well as the student to feel more connected to one another which for me is very important!
Hope that helps!
Teachers aren’t paid all that much even though they have one of the most important jobs in the country. And then, working over-time is not paid. Do you know what it’s called to work without being paid? That’s slavery. But then again, all capitalism does that in order to make a profit, so I won’t make an issue of it.
Anyways, I’m a very… in-depth student, you could say. The professor talks about a topic in class one day and I’ll go home and research it the next, making sure I got all the correct information and more. Therefore, I am of the opinion that students really would be able to learn more if they would apply themselves and stop always looking to the teacher for answers. One should look to the teacher for guidance, not the solution.
As for an example… I was reading William Blake’s “To Winter” outside of class and couldn’t really understand how it could be talking about cars and pillars in Winter. I couldn’t ask a question about it during class because really, it had nothing to do with the subject we were talking about. So I sent my teacher an Email asking if she could make sense of the passage.
Of course, she couldn’t, but that’s besides the point. What matters is that she directed, guided me to the sources to find the information myself. And now, thanks to that, I understand that Blake wasn’t talking about winter so much, as he was describing a Volcano eruption to the season.
Like, for example, my coursework took longer than others as I wrote more. My teacher offered classes because HE gave me a shorter deadline.
Sorry, if you don’t understand what I mean :S…
Thanks a lot to my teacher who helped me preserve my love for music.
