maybe because they want to build new buildings and the old buildings are taking up most of the space in a town?….

To make space for other things like housing, transport (railway system), supermarkets.
Because they didn’t look attractive
Because they were derelict (not used anymore)
Because they were bad for the environment (factory smoke)
Because they were too expensive to maintain.
