i’m quite sure this is his story:
he’s with some monks who went off to…Japan was it? or was it Surigao? anyway, some soldiers got them and tortured them to denounce their faith. Ruiz did not. They tortured him through numerous ways. he also said this line: “If i had a thousand lives, i will give them all to God.”. He died when he was trapped upside-down in the garbage dump.
in shorter terms: he was a martyr.
