why do we write in the present tense?

Okay,it’s actually a basic concept. You have the Past tense, The Present Tense, and The Future Tense, which I won’t really go into.

For example:

“She smiled”Is the past tense. “She smiles” is the present tense.

Usually past tense words end with “ed” but not always. Present tense words vary. They mostly are just the base word that sometimes have an added “s” that follows the base word.
