In some areas, they were carried on a string around the neck.

Many of the outfits people wore, did not have pockets.

No really!

Coins used to be placed on dead peoples’ eyes to keep their eyelids closed, even as rigormortis set in.

But what if they were wrong and the person was still alive? At least if there was a hole in the middle of the coin they could see, and then jump up and tell someone — See I’m not so dead after all.

OK, enough for me today.

My understanding was that they had holes so that the coins could be carried on a cord around the waist. No pockets in grass skirts and the like you know.

So you could put them on a string, hang it around your neck, and keep an eye on them. Especially in a land where people didn’t have much clothing or pockets…
