There was no controversy at the time the bombs were dropped, the controversy only began when revisionist history made up lies that stated the Japanese were preparing to surrender but the U.S. wanted to use the bombs anyway. This is not at all true and nobody who fought in the war felt that an invasion of the Japanese home island was a better option. It’s easy for those who never served in combat to claim that it was the wrong thing to do, I’ve never met anyone who ever fought in any war who thinks the U.S. shouldn’t have done it.

The Allies did (more specifically, the U.S. Army Air Force dropped it). The first atomic bomb, nicknamed “Little Boy,” was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan from a B-29 bomber nicknamed the “Enola Gay” on August 6, 1945. Three days later, on August 9, 1945, the allies dropped a second atomic bomb, nicknamed “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki, Japan. The Japanese surrendered on August 15, 1945, effectively ending World War II.

According to “history” the United States of America. Now, did the war really end should be the focus of the question at hand. Did we not continue fighting communism in Korea and then Vietnam? Then in Afghanistan aiding the freedom fighters lead by Usama Bin Laden? Then the “rebels” of South America? I personally don’t believe that there is a defining starting point or ending point to a war, it is a never ending circle of hatred and fear. Read “Blowback” sometime, quite an eye opener.
