I’m a Dutch student, living in the South of the Netherlands, and the first two I think are most relevant to the Netherlands are the following:

– Climate Change

Covers the entire globe, I know, but the Netherlands lie below sea level + it is the ending point of many rivers starting in e.g. the Alps, meaning that only a slight increase in the water level (temperature) can cause a large part of the Netherlands to lie at the bottom of the sea. The Dutch built “dijken” (dikes) to keep their feet dry. This is going quite well so far, although there have been floodings in recent years, the largest one in 1953 when there was a catastrophic disaster, and another large one in the south of the NL in 1995 .

Nowadays the Dutch sometimes flood farming grounds during periods with high water, these are so-called “uiterwaarden”). Also, the “Deltaworks” are used to prevent the sea water to reach the Dutch inlands. Finally, the Dutch have closed an entire sea (the Zuiderzee) into a lake (the IJsselmeer, more info on the link below).

– Pollution

The NL are the most densily populated area in Europe, and have a large industries in the West of the NL (e.g. Rotterdam harbour, one of the world’s largest). Although this large harbour is economically attractive, it pollutes the air, and is one of several reasons why there is terrible congestion in the western part of the NL.

Hope I could help you out a bit, the answer of DrlG with all the links can help you with finding the right references:).

environmental problems in NL. A huge thing is the effect of the global environmentaal effects. Because the Netherlands is for 30% under sea level, another 30% is on sea level and 40% is just barely above it.
So the country is basicly for 60% in danger of flooding all the time. Now it is clearl that because environmental effect sea levels are rizing, this has a huge effect on the Dutch and their dykes and sea barriers.

Environmental problems
– bringing down CO2 n NL is huge problem
– climate change
– a loss in biodiversity and natural energy sources
– noice polution
– light polution
– industrial accidents
– genetic modification is a bing thing in Europe. We don’t know the risks.
