lots of methods. You can largely use the family they belong two. The first column of the periodic table as a +1 for instance. The second column is a +2,

However, using this method you would need to skip transition elements as they vary. When you get to 4 it is either +4 or -4 and then at 5 it is -3 then -2 and then -1 for chlorine etc.

The best method I know of is to get a periodic table of the elements that contains them. I have one on my palm PDA that has everything you would need and then some. A quick search on the internet will provide abundant resources.
