Chapter 1

Summary

The novel opens with the first-person narrator, Holden Caulfield, speaking directly to a psychoanalyst or psychologist. Because he has had a complete mental breakdown, Holden has been sent to this “rest home” for treatment. As he talks, his mind frequently wanders and, therefore, his story is often filled with digressions. The first digression is about D.B., Holdens older brother who is a writer. He feels that D. B. has “sold-out” in his literary career, for he is now in Hollywood writing screenplays, like a “prostitute”. More…..

Yes, most libraries would have it;as would most bookstores. It was written by J.D. Salinger, and published in 1953. It centers on Holden Caulfield, a 16-year-old prep school student, who is disgusted by phoniness and lack of innocence in his world. He is expelled from school, spends a weekend on his own in New York City, where he lives with his parents, staying in cheap hotels and on the street. He meets all kinds of people; from tourists to prostitutes to nuns. All end up disappointing him, with the possible exception of his younger sister, who talks him out of running away. With nowhere else to go, he returns to his parents, suffers a mental breakdown, and uses his recovery time to write the story.

Now considered a classic of adolescent angst, and often required reading in high schools, it was a it controversial when it was first published, probably because of the use of some rough characters, situations, and language.
