I’ll assume since you’re talking about forensics, that you want fingerprint identification.

It’s a system to automatically match fingerprints and a number of countries including the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK use various AFIS systems. AFIS takes tenprint cards from law enforcement, uses a program called LiveScan to upload them, and uses an algorithm to mark all the identifying points of the fingerprint.

There is also an Automatic FIS which is civilian.
