We’ll use x to represent the small number and x+2 to represent the larger number, seeing as the next even integer will be two larger than the smaller number.

So if the sum of the larger and 3 times the smaller is 234, than

(x+2) + 3x=234

x + 2 + 3x=234

Combine like terms:

4x + 2 = 234

Subtract the 2:

4x = 232

Divide by 4 to get x alone:

x = 58

So if x=58, the next even integer would be 60

So the numbers are 58 and 60.

the equation is

(x)+(3x+2)=234

work:

4x+2=234

-2 -2

4x=232

/4 /4

x=58

check:

(x)+(3x+2)=234

58+3(58)+2=234

58+174+2=234

234=234

therefore the two consecutive even numbers are 58 and 60
