Moral, ethics and the constant questioning mind. Although the goals and explorations may be different the drive to achieve them has not diminished at all. And because of the expansion of education we all have the ability to achieve enormous goals.
Even today you can tell who is and who isn’t an engineer just by watching them interact.
Also, in my opinion, I think engineers have a self-defined societal debt to better our way of lives…this hasn’t changed in thousands of years. We just want to make things better.
