The French settled in the area of Quebec and Ontario after the French explorers in the Saint Lawrence / Mississippi river. Because of LaSalle’s discovery of the Mississippi, the French claimed all land along the Miss’i and Ohio Rivers all the way through Pennsylvania (fort Duquesne near Pitts’bg) and through New York.
The English colonized “New England” and the New York area.
The Indian tribes allied with one or the other, and had their own hatred of rival tribes.
The French wanted to push southward into New York, and built fort TICONDEROGA on the northern tip of Lake George, NY. The English built FORT WILLIAM HENRY on the southern tip. A very important naval battle occured to win control of the Lakes (George and Champlain).
