I went to Texas State University and I got a degree in Mass Communication with a concentration in broadcasting. My intention was to go into sports broadcasting. I got more involved in writing for the newspaper, but my degree allowed me to learn a great deal about broadcasting. First, of course you need a high school diploma. Now, you say you are considering being in front of and behind the camera. These two things require different levels of school. I know many people who got jobs working cameras without a college degree. Thus, it is not the highest paying job out there. On the other hand, there are very few successful people who get jobs announcing without a degree. You need to find a college program with offers mass communication or even radio-television-film (RTF) and you need to see if they offer classes devoted to television broadcasting. People in front of the camera, specifically anchors, can and usually do make a lot of money. I personally know two anchors in San Antonio, one makes around $450k and the other made $200k before switching to the 5 o’clock news, which was a pay cut. What you will learn in college is how to write for broadcasting, how to use your voice, and how to listen to a producer and director. These are all invaluable skills for an announcer, and not skills a station is going to want to teach you. Also, in college you will get to make your tape which you will send to stations hoping to get a job! One more thing, be prepared to start at the bottom and stay there for years. It sounds like hard work, and it is, but if it is your passion it will be worth it!
