Ponce de Leon named the area he explored in 1513 “Florida” because he discovered it on Easter, and one of the names of the feast of Easter in Spanish is ‘Pascua Florida’ (or Flowery Easter). He claimed the land for Spain.
Later, Spain and England contested for the area. Eventually, Spain sold the land to the United States in 1819. In 1845, it became a state.
