I just haven’t felt like myself lately. I don’t know what’s wrong. I have no motivation and I’m, (hesitate a few seconds and work up some tears) so depressed. I tried to do the assignment but I just couldn’t concentrate. Tell him/her that you are going to go to the counseling center after all your classes today and sort through it. Then tell him/her you know it isn’t the norm, but could you please have an extension? S/he will feel so bad for you that s/he will give in!

There are no good excuses. Just be honest and see if the teacher will let you turn it in late, even if it means you won’t get a perfect grade even if everything’s right.

I turned in one assignment late one time and said I had forgotten to do it. The normal policy for it to have like 10% taken off the grade. As I was honest when most people would have created a lie to try to get around the loss of points, the teacher gave me full credit. Not saying that happens all the time, but some teachers appreciate honesty. Plus, you can never get in more trouble for telling the truth. Tell a lie and the person finds out not only do you lose their trust, but you could get in more trouble. Then, when you really do get sick the night before, the teacher will be more likely to believe you.

If the teacher won’t take it for a grade, maybe ask them to look over it and mark what is wrong, so that you can learn from the homework assignment, especially if it is math or science.

Yup – tell the truth. Your teacher might get annoyed or fed up with your lackadaisical behaviour – but she’ll always have a very good opinion of your character. She’ll get vexed with an action of yours, but she’ll never doubt your innate worth.

Well it’s one you can only use once, but it worked for me really well (and it was actually true) – tell your (preferably Christian) teacher that your parents just split up and you left your homework at your dads when your mum came to pick you up. Maybe shed a tear or two?
